Senior Medical Underwriter — Life Settlements

Details:

THE OPPORTUNITY

My client is seeking a Senior Medical Underwriter to join its specialized life settlement investment team. This is a highly technical, hands-on opportunity for an experienced medical underwriting professional to evaluate complex cases through the lens of longevity risk — not simply determining when an insured may die, but understanding both what could shorten life expectancy and what could allow someone to live significantly longer than expected.

The successful candidate will initially work closely with the teams current underwriting leadership, including a highly respected medical underwriting expert with 25+ years of experience. Over time, this individual will have the opportunity to develop the technical judgment and credibility to assume broader responsibility for the firm’s medical underwriting function.

Approximately 90% of the role is focused on underwriting, medical research, analysis, and complex case evaluation.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Evaluate complex medical cases and develop sophisticated longevity assessments based on the full clinical and functional picture
  • Analyze disease progression, comorbidities, treatment, functional status, prognosis, and competing mortality
  • Think probabilistically — considering distributions, conditional survival, uncertainty, and potential long-tail outcomes
  • Take a longitudinal view of health, identifying changes and trends over the past 12–36 months rather than relying on a snapshot
  • Assess functional indicators such as ADLs, gait, falls, cognition, weight trajectory, hospitalizations, treatment tolerance, and social support
  • Research medical conditions, treatments, and emerging literature, particularly across oncology, cardiology, neurology, and metabolic disease
  • Challenge assumptions, identify missing or conflicting information, and triangulate when the available evidence is incomplete
  • Clearly communicate underwriting conclusions, supporting rationale, and factors that could change the assessment
  • Partner with underwriting, actuarial, pricing, and investment professionals
  • Leverage AI and emerging technology appropriately while knowing when to question or validate its conclusions
  • Over time, mentor others and take on increasing technical and leadership responsibility

WHAT THEY’RE LOOKING FOR

The ideal candidate is:

  • Clinically sophisticated — understands disease beyond diagnosis codes and recognizes how comorbidities interact
  • Analytical and probabilistic — comfortable making judgments when certainty is impossible
  • Longitudinal and function-oriented — focused on trajectory, not simply diagnoses or cohort averages
  • Naturally skeptical — questions medical records, research, assumptions, and conventional conclusions
  • Creative and intellectually curious — enjoys solving complex problems with incomplete information
  • Intellectually flexible — willing to change an assessment when the evidence warrants it
  • Highly self-driven — effective working independently in a remote environment
  • An excellent communicator — able to explain complex medical and risk concepts clearly to investors, attorneys, regulators, and other stakeholders
  • Technologically capable — comfortable using AI as a tool while understanding its limitations
